So there I was, running Windows Update on bunch of computers at work like I do every month and on the final computer something goes awry, on the console there’s an innocent “preparing to configure, do not turn off your computer” message.. so what’s the big deal? you might ask, well .. this one wasn’t going away. I waited few minutes, then some more and when I had waited for something like 10-15 minutes I felt my stomach cramp up (since that’s forever in my perspective since I have horrible luck restarting physical machines, they tend to die on me). Something just had to go wrong on the last one .. and here I was looking forward to going home, start my extended weekend and catch up on some sleep.
Tonight I experienced a strange network problem,
I found myself unable to connect to my Win7 Media Center, from anything I tried.. all the remote management tools I used didn’t work and not even remote desktop. The machines IP responded to ping fine but I could not resolve the DNS name of the machine which was weird, what was weirder was that I had just been using the machine few hours before without a problem. I couldn’t sleep anyways so I grabbed the extra keyboard and mouse I have on hand and started debugging the problem.
Be aware of people who randomly add you on MSN, they might be bots trying to lure you into giving up personal information and/or credit card information. one of them recently contacted me and here is how the conversation went.
What is spam ?
“Spam is the abuse of electronic messaging systems (including most broadcast media, digital delivery systems) to send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately”
Every once in a while some spam gets through my mailbox’s spam filter and is sitting for me to open.
I’ve never fallen victim to spammers but I know of people who have, computer illiterates are especially prone to falling prey to these people.
So, how do you spot a spam when the spam filters don’t, here are some things to look out for.
Jóhannes H. Laxdal is a specialized humanoid carbon unit whose field is computers and telling lousy jokes, it has a tendency to put "well" before every sentence it utters. In here you will find its ramblings about computer-related stuff.
